Yom Kippur War

Ramat Eshkol

Times running out to Decide-Panyee Soccer Players

Intro:

In 1986 on a small floating village in Thailand, Panyee, a group of boys watched many games of football (soccer) on T.V. They wanted to play because they thought that they would make a good team, and because they just wanted to play.
Can’t play sports here:
The boys did not give up on themselves and decided to become soccer champions, even when people started to make fun of them. Someone said, “You think that you can become champions here? Look at where you live.” The kids new that the person was right, just like I said they did not give up on themselves; and built their own field to play on.

The tournament:

The group of boys practiced and played a lot. Then one day one of the kids came over to the field with a flier to enter a tournament. The boys did not know if they should enter, but entered since they thought, that they were good enough. Before they went someone who was watching them, gave them new clothes to wear. Some people came to cheer them on. The first game of the tournament they won 2-0. They played so well, that they made it to the semifinals.

At the semifinals:

At the semifinals it was raining and the other team was really good; but to make it even worse the boys were getting their shoes filled with water. By halftime they were losing 2-0. Then the boys came up with an idea. They would take off their shoes. After the boys took off their shoes, they played much better and scored two goals to even the score at 2, 2-2. They lost when the other team scored last minute goal.

Conclusion:

In the end the boys came in 3rd place. Even though they did not win the game, they were happy that they even got this far. The important thing is that they inspired others to play soccer throughout the world.

Trimester Reflection #3

Since the beginning of the year, I really enjoyed here at school. I really enjoyed all of the fun activities that we do. Writing narratives, prompts, making a prezi, power points, and much, much more. The reason why I enjoyed the narratives is because we get to write and share about a very fun and important part in you life. The prompt is when we write about a what happened and all the main points in a story. The prezi is really fun; you can add videos and pictures. The website is prezi.com . The power point is about the same; you can add slides, transitions and much, much more.
Sometimes math is hard for me since we start something new or I just forget something. The prompt writing was really fun, but sometimes I get stuck on something. Everything else sometimes I get stuck as well.
I can't wait for summer to come. My guess is that 6th grade is going to be great. I hope that we can do some of the same things as we did this year. Overall, I can't wait.

Megillat Rut

By: Binyamin Katsman
                                                    6/3/14
                                                    Ruth
           Chapter 1
In the days before the kings, judges of Israel; there was a famine in BetLechem. The famine made many people go, and leave from BetLechem to somewhere else. Naomi (The mother-in-law of Orpah, and Ruth), Orpah, and Ruth went to Moab. A while before the famine, Naomi’s Orpah’s and Ruth’s husbands all died. When Naomi heard that the famine in BetLechem ended, she and Ruth went back BetLechem; and Orpah stayed in Moab.
This Famous line that Ruth said to Naomi before she went with her to BetLechem.
For wherever you go, I will go; wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people; your G-d shall be my G-d; where you die, I will die and be buried.”

Ruth
Chapter 2
Naomi had a relative on her late husband’s side. The relatives name was Boaz. One day, Ruth said to Naomi that she was going to glean in the fields. The Torah says that when we harvest crops, we shall not pick up the stalks of whatever you planted; you have to leave the stalks that have fallen to the ground for the poor to glean. Ruth did just that. Ruth went to the fields which happened to the fields of Boaz to glean. When Boaz sees who was gleaning in his fields, he told Ruth…
“Stay gleaning in these fields. Boaz told the men not to bother Ruth. If Ruth wants a drink, she can get a drink from the men’s jars of water which they have drawn.”
Boaz makes sure that Ruth gets enough food to eat. Boaz tells his men to leave some extra stalks for Ruth to glean. When Ruth gets home, she tells Naomi all about Boaz. Naomi then says…
“Bless be he of the Lord who has not failed in his kindness to living or to the dead. For the man is related to us. He is one of our redeeming kinsman.”
That means that Boaz could be Ruth’s late husband and provide security for Ruth.

Ruth
Chapter 3
Naomi was then struck with an idea. Naomi says to Ruth… “I must find a home for you which you will be happy there.” Naomi tells Ruth to dress up, and go to the threshing floor. When Boaz sits down Ruth shall uncover Boaz’s feet when he lies down.
Boaz told Ruth…
“There is someone else in line before you. In the morning if he redeemer, good! Let him. But if he does not, I will be a redeemer for you.”

Ruth
Chapter 4
When Boaz went to the city gate, he saw someone else who was closer related to Ruth’s late Husband. Boaz says to this relative (Ploni Almoni) about the land that belongs to the late son of Naomi’s late husband, and that Ploni Almoni has the right to refusal in purchasing the land.
Boaz says…“If you are willing to redeem the land, and redeem it. But if you don’t, then tell me.”
Ploni says he will redeem the land.
Boaz says…“If you want to redeem the land, you also must marry Ruth, the widow, so that her late husband’s name will be perpetuated.”
Ploni says that he will now not redeem the land.

In the end Ruth and Boaz were married and they had a son named Obed, who was the father of Jesse, who was the father of David, who became King of Israel.

Planet in Peril

Planet in Peril

Planet in Peril is a DVD were you go around the world with Anderson Cooper and Dr. Sanjay Gupta, and they explain to you why climate change is happening through-out the world. They are trying to stop climate change. Ether humans are to blame or the world or animals. Which do you think?
I think that the humans are to blame for what's happening. The reason I think this is that since humans are releasing toxic chemicals into the air. The chemicals prevent the warm air from getting out of the planet's atmosphere. This causes ice and snow to melt because of the rising temperatures.
Fun Facts:
  • The Sun is cooling but slightly over the years, not enough to say that the sun is to blame for this climate change. Over the past few years the Earth has gotten warmer.
  • The way the earth moves, the Sun influences the amount of the Sun's energy. Earth's movement can cause climate change, but it would take ten hundreds of thousands of years.
  • When Volcanoes erupt, they let out small amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere like ashes and dust. Sometimes when Volcanoes erupt, the ashes and dust goes so high up into the atmosphere, it blocks some of the Sun's light from reaching Earth.
Some places like Lake Chad in China, people get ill and die because the water is so toxic. Madagascar is where about 90% of Earth's animal live and many animals are dying. People are trying to take the endangered animals and sell them for money or use them for medicine. Carteret Island is where some people live. The Carteret Island is being sunken by the water since the coral reefs surrounding the island die; storm water can reach the island since the reefs are supposed to stop the water from reaching land. Polar Bears are endangered animals that live in very cold snowy places. In Greenland the ice and snow is melting. More than 1 billion tons of ice/snow melts each year. Since the ice is melting new islands are born. Many different things are happening because of climate change.

American Revolutionary War Techniques

What were the Techniques the Colonists used to start a revolution between 1763 and 1776? Do you think the Colonists could have achieved independence without these techniques?

Sons of Liberty:
a.     Got together as an organized group, and made a vow to stop doing business with the British.
b.    The reason they did it is that we didn’t agree with the British rights and laws.
c.     We don’t agree with the British, because we want our freedom and our own rights.
Taxes:
a.     Such as the Sugar Act, the British reduced the taxes but made taxes on more things.
b.    We got mad and rampaged, and the British got mad back to start a war.
c.     Like the Declaratory Act we should be able to make our own taxes ourselves without the British.
Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party:
a.     For the Boston Massacre because the British rose the taxes we rampaged them and lost 6 lives.
b.    For the Boston Tea Party, Colonists dressed as Mohawk Indians and through 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor.
c.     I think that the Colonists could have achieved independence without these two techniques, but not without all the Techniques.

Independence

Independence

In class since my last blog post that I wrote about Independence, a lot of things happened. To start off there are no more people who are Neutralists. Everyone has chosen a team Patriots or Loyalists. Most people chose to be on the Patriots.
I really liked this simulation because there was another congress and more things have happened. For example, like I said before, everyone has chosen a team to be on. I don’t dislike anything; because what we are doing (Independence) is really fun. If another class does this I have a suggestion. My suggestion is that since you might not want to start off as a patriot, Neutralist, or Loyalist, I think that each person individually, should pick out a name tag, and which ever faction you picked you are in; Patriots, Loyalists, or Neutralists

Here is the link to our congresses.

Do you want to do Independence when you are in 5th grade?
Which faction are you in?

Math Night

Math Night

In our class the fifth grade class for Math Night we made fruit salad equations, we made two game boards for three in a row, and on a sharp board we did different math fractions. For the fruit salad equations we had cut up apples, oranges, strawberries, and bananas. On a sheet of paper you write the fraction for the amount of apples, oranges, strawberries, and bananas you want I you fruit salad. Your fruit salad may have the total amount of 16 pieces of fruit. For example, you could have 4/16 apples, 4/16 oranges, 4/16 strawberries, and 4/16 bananas. Since 4/16+4/16+4/16+4/16=16/16 you can have that equation for your fruit salad.

The game three in a row is where you play on a game board. The way you play is… you are supposed to play with two people or more. You role two dice. Let's say that I rolled a 6 and a 9, your fraction will be 6/9. After your role you try to find 6/9 on the game board. If 6/9 is not there then you simplify 6/9 to let's say 2/3 or something else. If the fraction is still not their then you can role again. You mark the game with different color circle things that you might use for bingo. You have to get three in a row to win.

The Sharp board game is where you have two fractions, make the denominator the same number as the numerator. After you get your fraction you add them up to find your answer. For example, if you have the two fractions 4/16 and 2/8 the denominator 8 is smaller than 16. To get the same denominator you have to multiply 8 by 2, because 8+8=16. Since you always have to multiply the numerator by the same number as the denominator, the 2 becomes 4. Now you have the math problem 4/16, and 4/16+4/16=8/16. The last step is if you have to simplify your answer, like 8/16 you simplify 8/16. Since 8 is half of 16 your answer simplified will be 1/2.

I liked Math Night a lot. The reason for this is that you can learn different math concepts and learn new things. I hope there will be a Math Night every year, for years to come.

Do you like Math Night?
Have you ever been to Math Night?

Revolutionary War

Revolution Simulation
In our class the fifth graders have been pretending to be in the Revolutionary War. The class has been divided into three groups. The Patriots, the Loyalists, and the Neutralists. I am in the Patriot group. In each group, the group people are supposed to earn pows (dollars). You can make these different projects, like a mottle ship used during the Revolution, or you can make a map of the 13 Colonies, but have to add the main places, you can make a diorama of a battle, and so on. Each project is worth ten pows (dollars) if you made the project by putting your hard work and effort into it. I have made a mottle ship, a map of the 13 Colonies, a mottle of the Independence hall, and a diorama of the Battle of Lexington.
We have had these different congresses. Before each congress you have to write a speech about why the Neutralists should join your side. The Patriots or the Loyalists. At the end of each Congress you choose a side to be on. If you go to let say the Patriots, but you want to go to the Loyalists you can't because you already chose a side. However, if you a still a Neutralist, you can choose a side at the end of a different congress. If you are still a Neutralist at the end of our Revolution project, you decided to stay a Neutralist for the project.
We also have these things where you discuss with your group if it is good or bad for you. At the end of when we all finish discussing, we go over with the class what you thought and came up with, with your group. During the class discussing you gain or lose pows (dollars). The reason for this is that if it was good for you, you would gain pows(dollars), but if it is bad for you, you would lose pows (money). Right now I have 152 pows (dollars). The most in the class and group.
How many pows (dollars) do you have?
What group are you in or have you not decided?

Hero Summery

George Washington

A Hero From The Revolutionary War by: BinyaminKatsman

During the American Revolutionary war George Washington was the commander and chief of the Patriots. People were fighting for freedom from the British with the hand and attitude of George Washington. On 1775 in Philadelphia George Washington became an amazing commander and chief. He was fighting for freedom alongside with other Patriots. He turned an army of people into a military. According to Rosalyn Shchanzer in the book George V.S. George (George Washington V.S. King George the III) George Washington had “1,200 Rebels build a massive fort atop of Breed’s Hill in just one night…” “Even though the fort got destroyed, it was the army that made the British lose 92 officers and more than half their men.” George Washington the commander and chief for the Patriots, became the first President of the United States of America. He is now gone but his legacy as the commander and chief who helped the Revolutionary War come to an end cause remains.

This is George Washington.

This is George Washington fighting during the Revolutionary War.

The Big Friendly Giant.
In the book the BFG (The Big Friendly Giant) by Roald Dahl the BFG Helps Sophie. In the story when the BFG and Sophie became friends they both stopped the other mean giants from eating children. If Sophie and the BFG didn't meet they never would have stopped the giants, and all of the children would have been eaten up.

I think that the moral of the story is to help your friends and other people when they need the help. For example, just like I said before if Sophie and the BFG didn't help each other they never would have stopped the giants. I think that if people work together and try, almost anything is possible.
Do you agree with me?
Would you have tried to stop the other giants with another giant friend?

Science Expo

Science Expo
At the Science Expo I was suppose to talk about the Puget Sound Region. I drew a line graph of how many acres (Area) of beaches were closed. I also helped with the info graph. The info graph was a picture and I wrote down what's happening in a cretin part of the picture.

I really enjoyed the Science Expo because we got to learn new things about different things. I also liked the exhibits, like what Kindergarten did; they made smoothies. The Science Expo was really fun because you are able to learn new things.

Did you like the Science Expo?

What did you learn at the Science Expo?

Self-Reflection

Literary Essay Self-Reflection

I really enjoyed writing and the ideas that got into my head for the literary essay. I thing that my strengths are ideas and effort that I put into my literary essay. The reason that I think this is, that I really put my effort and ideas into my literary essay.

I think that about nothing was hard for me, because I added what I needed to add. I think that I could have done a little bit better typing, but nobody is perfect. I think that I did a good job with my literary essay and how I did it.

Self-Reflection

Narrative Self-Reflection

I really enjoyed writing the narrative and the ideas that I put into it. I think that my strengths are writing and not stopping with my ideas of what happened to put in my narrative. The reason that I say this is that, I wrote the narrative with so many details. I also added many different transition words, to help add the ideas.

I don’t feel like anything was hard for me because I had a really fun time writing the narrative and enjoyed everything. If I did have trouble it would be my typing because I am a good at it but not the best at it. I think that I did a really good job typing y narrative and was calm of how long it took me, because it took a long time.

Trimester

Trimester Reflection #2

I am most proud of my Narrative and literary essay that we made this trimester. The reason for this is that, I have worked so hard on these particular projects. My Narrative and literary essay took me a while to finish, but I am proud of what I have accomplished.

I feel that I am really good at math and other things like are writing projects. I think that I can do better in math and can improve by learning the different math concepts. I think that by learning more math and getting a little bit more help on the hard things I can really improve my math concepts.

What do you think you can improve on?

Did you like the writing projects?
